Bringing together 30+ Asian and Asian diasporic artists, Unlicensed Goods is a major survey exploring the ad hoc networks and shadow economies that emerge alongside the global movement of manufactured goods and migrant communities. The exhibition highlights practices and initiatives at the intersection of art, design, and fashion.

Set inside an 18th-century townhouse near the British Museum, Ming’s work appears across three different rooms throughout the exhibition. One room is dedicated entirely to his sculptures of fruits, seeds, bones, shells, and hybrid forms, “evoking fantasies of growth and abundance in his studio while asking us to see their poetry.” In another gallery, Monumental Fruits—an unrealized public art proposal for the triangle at Canal and Baxter Streets in New York—is revisited through Canal Street Research and their examination into the site’s layered histories and changing urban landscape. Nearby, Ming’s work is also presented in conversation with Carrie Yamaoka.

An adjacent gallery revisits another chapter of Ming’s practice through Erotica, an archival presentation of the Epoxy Art Group’s collaborative slideshow, originally projected outdoors in SoHo in 1984. Featuring original slides by Bing Lee, Jerry Kwan, “Frog King” Kwok Mang Ho, Esther Liu, Ming Fay, Kang Chung, and Cissy Pao, the installation offers a rare glimpse into an important moment in New York’s downtown art scene.
